The release adds AI Gateway routing for AI nodes, expression-based role mapping with a drag-to-reorder UI editor, N8n Agent admin controls, and new Alibaba Cloud Model Studio and Moonshot Kimi nodes alongside 50 other fixes.

The n8n 2.17.0 release centers on AI Gateway, a unified routing layer for AI operations that now handles AI node requests and introduces a top-up billing flow for usage management. Expression-based role mapping arrives with a dedicated UI editor—administrators can define rules using drag-to-reorder interfaces, assign fallback roles, and provision access through dropdowns rather than manual assignments.

Sub-agents receive better context handling through structured briefings and debriefings, reducing misalignment between agent tasks. N8n Agent gains an admin settings page with an enable toggle and permissions controls, plus an opt-in enrollment flow.

The MCP Client tool node now prefixes tool names with their server name, preventing conflicts when multiple MCP servers expose tools with identical names. Connection lifecycle management is improved, closing MCP connections when node execution ends.

Security hardening addresses several vectors: MCP connection leaks are prevented by draining webhook close functions, tool access to the gateway settings directory is prohibited, and computer use connections are limited to cloud instances only.

Instance owners gain environment variable support for initial setup, reducing manual configuration overhead. The public API expands with project-scoped credential creation, projectId support when creating workflows, and a new insights summary endpoint.

Infrastructure improvements include SQLite advisory lock parity via in-process mutex, optimized audit queries to avoid PostgreSQL bind parameter limits, and a new missing-paired-item lint rule for community nodes.

Two new AI nodes join the ecosystem: Alibaba Cloud Model Studio and Moonshot Kimi Chat Model. Built-in node icons receive custom SVG updates.

Over 50 bug fixes resolve issues including Google Drive infinite pagination loops, HTTP Request Node multipart file uploads with binary streams, Box trigger pagination, GitLab binary data handling across storage modes, Microsoft Outlook polling after API errors, and Oracle Node stack overflows on large datasets.
